NATGAS: Netherlands Should Fill Gas Storage to 90% Pre Winter 25/26: GTS

NATGAS

The Netherlands should fill gas storage up to 90% of their capacity, around 11bcm, before winter 2025/2026 to avoid shortages in case a cold winter coincides with low gas availability, grid operator GTS said.

  • Supply disruption could cause shortages in the Netherlands as well as neighbouring Germany, Belgium and Britain as the country plays an important role in balancing gas demand and supply.
  • On Monday the Dutch government said storage sites must be at least 80% by 1 November 2025 compared to 74% required by the EC and 90% over the past two years, according to Montel.
  • Dutch gas storage was 92.3% full on Sept. 28, GIE data shows ahead of the coming winter season.
  • "Ensuring that the gas storage facilities are sufficiently filled, maintaining sufficient connection capacity with neighbouring countries and diversifying the gas supply are crucial measures for a stable supply of gas over the coming years," GTS said.
  • If EemsEnergyTerminal LNG closes as planned in 2027, extremely cold weather beyond 2030 could cause a supply shortage of 75 TWh, around 30% of normal, Gasunie warned.
  • “In collaboration with Gasunie and Vopak, I am investigating the possibilities for an extension of the operation of EET in the Eemshaven,” said Dutch Minister Sophie Hermans.
