National Address By Ramaphosa "Doubtful" For Friday: News24

SOUTH AFRICA

News24 reports that it appears "doubtful" that President Cyril Ramaphosa delivers the expected address to the nation today as the mood in his camp has shifted from a sense of defeat to determination to fight.

  • "I doubt there will be an address today; fight-back strategies are being explored and there is an overwhelming sense that the President needs to fight on for the best interests of the country," Ramaphosa's aide told News24.
  • The President's allies reportedly recognise that the country cannot be kept in suspense for too long. They noted that the "economy remains in a delicate position and the reforms need to be sustained. Decisions will have to be made sooner rather than later and communicated."
  • Local media earlier reported that Ramaphosa was leaning towards stepping down Thursday but his close allies managed to convince him to fight for survival, as they consider the Phala Phala report to be "extremely weak" and believe it does not warrant his resignation.
