National HICP Rates Varied Widely In August

National HICP rates varied widely in August, per Eurostat's compilation of flash estimates, with 10 of the 20 euro area countries seeing an acceleration in Y/Y HICP vs July, and the other 10 seeing decelerations.

  • Slovakia (9.6%) and Croatia (8.5%) were at the top of the annual increases with (their national statistics institute haven't released details yet), with Spain and Belgium (2.4%) posting the lowest inflation (mainly on base effects from 2022, with M/M rates at robust 2.5% and 0.5%, respectively).
  • Of the larger countries, Italy posted the biggest deceleration in headline Y/Y HICP (5.5% vs 6.3% prior), with France the biggest acceleration (5.7% vs 5.1% prior).
