National Security Meeting Could Decide Russia Sanctions

WHITE HOUSE

President Joe Biden is holding a national security meeting at the White House with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, and General Mark Milley.

  • The meeting follows Russian National Security Council meeting which has reportedly decided to formally recognise the breakaway Ukrainian republics of Luhansk and Donestk.
  • Debate is currently ongoing on Russian state television about the territorial limits of the new states and Russia's role in supporting them.
  • The White House meeting may be followed by the announcement of sanctions on Russia although this is likely to be coordinated first with NATO Allies.
