NATO Leaders Cautious Of Russian Intentions

SECURITY
A call between UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Italian Prime Minister Draghi has concluded with early signs that the NATO leaders remain wary of Russia's intentions at ceasefire negotiations with Ukraine in Turkey.
  • The call came in the wake of positive signs from ceasefire talks suggesting that both Kyiv and Moscow may be willing to compromise on key issues including Crimean and Donbas sovereignty and Ukrainian demilitarisation.
  • The NATO leaders call was followed immediately by a call between Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to AP: 'Putin told Macron "nationalists" in Mariupol must lay down arms.'
  • Boris Johnson wrote: 'Discussed the ongoing need to support and sustain Ukraine this afternoon with US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Italian Prime Minister Draghi. There will be no let up in our resolve until aggression against Ukraine ends.'
  • Alex Wickham of Politico quotes Johnson: 'We must judge Putin’s regime by their actions not their words. Putin is twisting the knife in the open wound of Ukraine in an attempt to force the country and its allies to capitulate…we should be unrelenting in our response.'
  • Ceasefire negotiations will continue this evening.
