NBP Gov Says Period Of High Inflation Is Now Behind, Public TV Holds Election Debate

POLAND
  • NBP Governor Adam Glapinski reiterated the main themes of his press conference in an interview for Sieci. The official said that last week's 25bp rate cut testifies to how good the current situation is, as inflation will ease below +7% Y/Y in October. The Governor noted that the problem of high inflation is now "behind us". He accused hawkish dissenters in the MPC of "political intentions" and attempts to unseat the government by breaking the economy.
  • Public TV broadcaster holds an election debate today at 17:30BST/18:30CEST, setting the stage for a stand-off between former Prime Minister and current opposition leader Donald Tusk (Civic Coalition) and his former adviser and current Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki (Law and Justice). Two separate opinion polls for Rzeczpospolita/RMF FM and Onet showed that most voters were critical of ruling party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski's decision to skip the debate and delegate Morawiecki to represent Law and Justice.
  • Local media outlets circulated footage of military tankers at petrol stages operated by state-owned energy giant Orlen. The company dismissed allegations of tapping into the army's fuel reserves but admitted that the military has been helping with the supply of fuel to the stations. The tankers have been spotted at stations experiencing pump "outages" (widely believed to be masking fuel shortages), with Orlen allegedly keeping a lid on prices ahead of the October 15 elections, boosting demand for the discounted petrol.
  • During an interview with Polsat News, President Andrzej Duda again hinted that he will likely give the first chance to form government to election front-runners, regardless of whether they immediately have the support of a majority of lawmakers.
