Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is delivering his second press conference of the week, this time to the foreign press, amid increasing concerns that months-long negotiations for a Gaza ceasefire deal are on the brink of collapse. LIVESTREAM
- Netanyahu again expressed contrition for failing to prevent the deaths of six hostages in Gaza this week but stressed that the deaths make achieving Israel's goals more important.
- As he did in his press conference on September 2, Netanyahu restated that Israel cannot withdraw IDF troops from the Philadephi Corridor - the narrow strip of land between Gaza and Egypt that has become the sticking point in negotiations -, unless "there is a situation where the Philadephi Corridor cannot be used as a smuggling route."
- Netanyahu's comments come as US officials push what they characterise as a "final" deal to achieve a truce in Gaza, although they have declined to outline a timeframe for the deal.
- White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby confirmed to reporters yesterday that the ceasefire framework includes the removal of IDF troops from the Corridor, noting: "That’s the proposal that Israel had agreed to.”
- Separately, Barak Ravid at Axios reports that high-ranking security officials from Israel, the US, and Lebanon held talks this week on, "how to reach a long-term diplomatic solution to end the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in a scenario where a ceasefire deal is reached in Gaza," but, "also discussed how to de-escalate the fighting in the more likely scenario at the moment of no Gaza ceasefire deal in the near term."
