Netanyahu Talks Up US Links Following China Invite

ISRAEL

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office has confirmed that the PM has received an official invite to visit China. In announcing the invite Netanyahu's offics states that the PM informed members of the US Congress that the US is 'Israel's vital and irreplaceable ally'. Nevertheless the visit to Beijing coming amid some of the worst Israeli-US relations in years will garner notable attention in Washington, D.C.

  • The lack of bilateral visits and appearances between US and Israeli gov't officials, compared to historically conspicuous displays of friendship, come amid continued US opposition to proposed judicial reforms from the Netanyahu gov't.
  • It is not yet confirmed whether Netanyahu will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. President Xi met Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas earlier in June and offered to “play an active role" in the resolution of the Israel/Palestine issue.
