New COVID-19 Cases Lowest Since 12 April

Gearoid Reidy at Bloomberg tweets: "Tokyo coronavirus case count (at the new release time of 4:45pm) for today is 340. Previous two Mondays: 419, 573. 7-day average 638.1. Serious cases +7 to 68. That's the lowest day of cases since April 12."

  • While the scale of Japan's COVID-19 outbreak remains well below that seen in Japan's Western peers, there remains intense speculation over the country's hosting of the Olympic Games in the summer.
  • While the gov't and the IOC remain committed to hosting the games, opinion polls have shown increasing public backlash against their hosting. A poll from early May by Yomiuri Shimbun showed 59% of respondents in favour of the games' cancellation, compared to 39% saying that they should go ahead.
