New Foreign Min Meets French Counterpart Ahead Of Scholz-Macron Talks

GERMANY

Germany's new Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock of the Greens, held her first foreign meeting earlier today alongside her French counterpary Jean-Yves Le Drian. Baerbock stated that "Germany has no closer friendship than with France. A strong Europe needs strong Franco-German impetus. Germany will fully support the French EU Council Presidency."

  • The foreign ministers' meeting comes ahead of newly-installed Chancellor Olaf Scholz's first foreign trip to Paris and Brussels, set for Friday. Both leaders have been keen to stress continued close ties between the nations in the wake of Angela Merkel's departure from the chancellery.
  • On Russia-Ukraine tensions Baerbock stated that "The territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine are non-negotiable for us. Russia would pay high political and economic price for renewed violation of Ukrainian statehood."
