New PM Sunak Set To Deliver First Address In Office Shortly

UK

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is set to deliver his first public address in office shortly, at around 1135BST (0635ET, 1235CET). Livestream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EQTnGvUxM0

  • Following his speech, which is seen as likely to be a relatively sombre address focusing on the economic landscape the UK faces, Sunak will begin to assemble his first Cabinet.
  • The most senior positions (Chancellor, Home Sec, Foreign Sec, Defence Sec, etc.) likely to be filled this afternoon.
  • Ben Riley-Smith at The Telegraph: "Others tipped… Mel Stride for chief whip… Craig Williams for Rishi PPS, possible cabinet returns for Dowden, Jenrick, Raab, Shapps, Barclay… (still nothing signed and sealed)."
  • If Stride is appointed chief whip, it would open the position of chair of the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee, a high-profile role in questioning the chancellor, governor of the BoE, and other senior Whitehall figures on the gov'ts economic plans.
  • Sunak's speech comes as the Kremlin, when asked about the new PM, says that 'We see no reason for hope for positive developments' in Russia's relations with the UK.
