New Poll Puts Duterte's Daughter In Top Spot To Follow As President

PHILIPPINES

The latest opinion poll from the Philippines shows President Rodrigo Duterte's daughter, Mayor of Davao City Sara Duterte-Carpio, as the most popular potential candidate to succeed her father once his term expires in 2022.

  • OCTA Research presidential election preference: Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio (HNP): 22%, Sen. Grace Poe (Ind.): 14%, Sen. Manny Pacquiao (PDP-L): 13%, Fmr Sen. Bongbong Marcos (NP): 13%, Mayor Isko Moreno (NUP): 12%. Fieldwork: 26/01/21- 01/02/20. Sample Size: 1,200
  • Rodrigo Duterte cannot run for a second term as this is prohibited by the Philippine constitution. There has been a call from supporters of the incumbent for the younger Duterte to run for president with the incumbent running as her vice-presidential running mate.
  • Should be noted that Sara Duterte has not yet announced a bid for the presidency, and indeed has sought to distance herself from the potential of being a simple cipher for her father, saying to the Manila Times that, "Continuity is not based on kinship. Anybody can continue the gains of a previous administration, President Duterte did that for President Aquino [Duterte's immediate predecessor]."
  • Rodrigo Duterte's approval ratings remain very high - around 70% in Dec 2020 - despite what has been criticised as an ineffective gov't response to COVID-19.
  • The other potential candidates all offer vastly different potentials. Sen. Grace Poe came third in the 2016 presidential election, and is seen as the main liberal, progressive, pro-business candidate. Sen. Manny Pacquiao is a former Octuple world champion boxer, and current party president of Rodrigo Duterte's populist centre-left PDP-Laban party. Former Senator Bongbong Marcos, son of Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos, could run for the conservative Nacionalista Party, a difficult prospect given the divisive history of the Marcos political dynasty in the Philippines.
