No Labels To Announce Framework For 2024 Ticket Today

US

The centrist political organisation No Labels is set to announce its framework for selecting a ticket for the 2024 Presidential election today. A bid which some Democrats fear could cost Biden the White House in November.

  • The Washington Post reports that Democrats, "do not want a rerun of 2016, when third-party candidates got millions of votes," adding that the DNC has organised a dedicated staff, “aimed stopping any third-party or independent candidates from gaining traction...”
  • In the 2016, former President Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan by a total of 67,000 votes. In these critical swing states, Green Party candidate Jill Stein won more than 500,000 votes. In 2020, President Biden's narrow win over Trump came with no major third-party candidates on the ballot.
  • Republican pollster Whit Ayres said: “History suggests disaffected voters gravitate back toward the main two party candidates, but we’ve never had two party candidates that are this unpopular where their negatives are higher than the positives for both of them."
  • The other major third-party candidate, Robert F Kennedy Jr., will reveal his running mate on March 26. NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura, both populist candidates with broad name recognition, are on the shortlist.
  • According to some polls, RFK is attracting close to 15% of the vote share in a three-horse race with Biden and Trump. Despite his Republican-leaning positions on many issues, the Kennedy name could siphon more votes from Biden than Trump.
