SECURITY

White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby has told reporters that there has been no movement on an agreement between Israel and Hamas to enact a humanitarian pause which could allow for the exchange of hostages and potentially lay the groundwork for a more permanent settlement to the conflict.

  • Kirby says negotiations are ongoing but, "it would not be appropriate" for him to speculate on where that's going.
  • Kirby says, on yesterday's strikes on three facilities in Iraq: "Initial reports indicate we had effective results on all three targets... I want to emphasize that these actions were taken in self defence... and consistent with international and domestic law."
  • Kirby says that 24 countries issued a joint statement in support of US/UK strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen: "I think its notable that more and more countries now want to show that they condemn indiscriminate and unlawful Houthi attacks on international commerce.
  • Kirby's comments, flagging up growing international support for military action against the Houthis, indicate that US strikes are likely to continue in the short-term.
