No Vote Today From Perm Reps On Tariff-Free Access To EU

Rikard Jozwiak at RFE/RL: "Likely no vote among EU ambassadors today on prolonging tariff free products from Ukraine by another year. More Technical talks with a view to vote on Fri." The issue of tariff free access for Ukrainian products, particularly grain, has become a major political issue in a number of CEE EU member states. Several countries bordering Ukraine have imposed restrictions on the import of Ukrainian grain due to the low price charged undercutting domestic farmers.

  • The tariff free access comes under the Association Agreement signed between the EU and Ukraine, and needs approval from permanent representatives for this access to be extended for another 12 months.
