Off'l Results Of Regional Elex Are Out, Reports Point To Tensions Within Ruling Coalition

POLAND
  • The official vote count in Poland's regional and local elections was slightly better for the main opposition Law and Justice (PiS) than the result suggested by the exit polls. Its candidate for the Mayor of Warsaw secured 23.1% of the vote (vs. 18.5% projected), even as incumbent Rafal Trzaskowski still won in the first round. The party's nationwide vote share in the elections to regional assemblies was 34.3% (leading in 7 legislatures), with the Civic Coalition on 30.6% (leading in 9 legislatures). All in all, opinion polls were significantly off the mark in a number of cases.
  • Onet reported that Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz's PSL party (part of the Third Way alliance) demanded that the Left gives away one of its ministerial seat after its poor showing in regional elections. According to the article, PSL would like to take over the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy or the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk preferring to stay on the sidelines and watch how tensions between his junior coalition partners evolve. Asked whether the Left's Wlodzimierz Czarzasty will succeed him as "rotational Speaker" halfway through this parliamentary term, Szymon Holownia (a co-leader of the Third Way alongside Kosiniak-Kamysz) said that the coalition agreement "is not the Holy Bible" and can always be renegotiated.
  • The Cabinet may today discuss additional support for families aimed at keeping young parents economically active.
