The volume of fuel that can be shipped on barges via the Rhine is set to decline next week as water levels drop, according to Bloomberg citing Riverlake.

  • Maximum intake at the key chokepoint of Kaub will be 1,150-1,200 mt when water falls to its lowest next week. This compares to current maximums of 1,480 mt.
  • “This will put some squeeze on barge capacity but with current demand we do not foresee any major issues here,” Riverlake said.
  • Barges carrying diesel and gasoil from Rotterdam must pass Kaub to reach inland destinations.
