OIL PRODUCTS: Rhine’s Falling Water Levels Slash Cargo Limits for Barges

OIL PRODUCTS

Declining water levels on the Rhine are severely restricting the amount of oil that barges can carry to inland Europe, Bloomberg said.

  • A barge loading middle distillates Aug. 29 will only be able to carry half its capacity beyond the chokepoint of Kaub, according to Riverlake.
  • “Water levels on the Rhine will continue to fall until the middle of next week,” Riverlake said in a report, cited by Bloomberg. After that, “there is a chance they will briefly rise again, but at least stabilize.”
  • A barge can normally haul as much as 2.5k mt of middle distillates is restricted to loading 1.36k mt if heading past Kaub. This could drop as low as 1.2k mt.
  • Water levels on the Rhine have dropped periodically in recent years. The water level at Kaub is likely to be as low as 108cm by Sep. 1.
  • The water level at Kaub fell as low as 30cm in 2022.
