Olympics To Take Place w/ No Overseas Spectators: Kyodo

Kyodo reporting that the Japanese gov't has agreed that this summer's Olympic Games should go ahead without the presence of spectators from other countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • The news was trailed in February, but this seeming confirmation will come as a blow to the Tokyo businesses that would have expected a major uptick in footfall from the games being held in the Japanese capital.
  • There remains the prospect of notable political blowback from the Games. The Japanese gov't has vociferously said the games will go ahead in a safe manner. However, some national Olympic programmes are yet to commit to attending the Games. Should any major sporting nation pull their teams from the Games it could lead to a notable diplomatic falling out with Tokyo, which is keen to have all nations participating.
