SOUTH KOREA: Opposition Delays Impeachment Motion Against Acting President Han

SOUTH KOREA

Yonhap News Agency reports that the opposition Democratic Party (DP) has postponed its earlier plan to file an impeachment motion against Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo until December 26.

  • The idea to impeach Han was conceived by DP lawmakers frustrated with his refusal to approve special counsel bills even as they have cleared parliament. The bills would open investigations into the conduct of President Yoon Suk-yeol and First Lady Kim Keon-hee.
  • The DP has insisted that the threshold for Han's impeachment should be that applied to the Prime Minister (simple majority or 151/300 MPs) rather than that applied to the President (two thirds or 200/300 MPs).
