Opposition Leaders Announce Plan To Boycott Final Votes On Judicial Overhaul

ISRAEL

The Times of Israel reports that the leaders of major Israeli opposition parties released a joint statement in which they vowed not to attend the final votes in the Knesset on the government's controversial judicial overhaul.

  • Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid), Benny Gantz National Unity), Avigdor Liberman (Yisrael Beteinu) and Merav Michaeli (Labour) met in Jerusalem today to come up with coordinated strategy on the contentious reforms of the judiciary.
  • Although opposition politicians lauded the President's efforts to promote negotiations, they decided that there could be no dialogue with the government until it halts the legislative process aimed at passing the reforms.
  • "We will do everything to prevent the passing of the laws, but if God forbid we get to a third reading - we will be a part of this and boycott the vote in the plenary," the four opposition leaders said.
