Opposition Pact Members Agree On Power-Sharing Arrangements, US Refuses To Recall Envoy

  • The Multi-Party Charter for South Africa (formerly known as the "moonshot pact") decided that he leader of the largest party will represent the coalition as the head of government business if they get to form government after the 2024 elections. This confirms earlier reports suggesting that the main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) could concede the presidency to a coalition partner. Furthermore, the coalition also committed to not entering any co-governing arrangements with the ANC or the EFF or vote on any office bearers from these parties. Note that EWN ran a report suggesting that there is scepticism among local political analysts as to whether the coalition could realistically count on getting 50+% of the vote and whether it will remain cohesive.
  • The preparations for the 15th BRICS Summit (August 22 - 24) are in full swing, with leaders due to start arriving in South Africa on Monday. The bloc's Energy Ministers are set to meet today, while China's ambassador will outline his country's participation in the summit.
  • The Mail & Guardian reports that the US will not recall its ambassador to South Africa Reuben Brigety despite pressure to do so over his earlier claims that Pretoria may have supplied weapons to Russia. A panel established by President Ramaphosa did not find evidence to justify these claims.
