Orban Confirms Military To Purchase 4 Additional Swedish Jets

HUNGARY

Speaking in Budapest following a bilateral meeting, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has confirmed that Hungary is set to purchasean additional four Swedish-made Saab Gripen fighter jets. Kristersson: "I strongly welcome deepened security cooperation between Sweden and Hungary...This agreement will strengthen European security and our countries' cooperation."

  • On the lengthy period of time it took for Hungary to agree to ratify Sweden's NATO accession, Kristersson states that "Sweden and Hungary don't agree on everything, but we should work more actively together where we have a common ground."
  • Hungarian PM Viktor Orban: "We have leased Gripen aircraft so far, this contract runs out...We decided to keep our air defence capabilities...This deal will increase our air defence capability and our commitment to NATO will increase."
  • While the Orban gov't has moved towards the NATO mainstream on approving Sweden's accession, it continues to rile EU partners with regards to Ukraine. Rikard Jozwiak at RFE/RL: "Now Hungary is blocking a joint EU statement on the second anniversary of the Russian full scale invasion of Ukraine. Will likely just be a joint statement of the three presidents of the EU institutions (council, commission, parliament)."
