Pakatan, Perikatan Leaders Head To Royal Palace, No PM Candidate Backed By Simple Majority

The leaders of Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional have both been summoned to the royal palace for an audience at 4:30pm local time/8:30am GMT after none of them managed to secure the backing of a simple majority of lawmakers.

  • "After receiving the nominations for a prime minister candidate, it is found that not a single MP in His Majesty's view has obtained a simple majority to be elected prime minister under the Federal Constitution," Royal Household Comptroller said in a statement.
  • Both Pakatan's Anwar Ibrahim and Perikatan's Muhyiddin Yassin had earlier made contested flagging their ability to form a governing coalition. Caretaker PM Ismail Sabri this morning indicated the neutrality of his Barisan Nasional alliance.
  • Malaysiakini reports that Malaysia's Attorney-General has arrived at the Royal Palace and the journalists from the national public broadcaster RTM are understood to be inside ahead of the possible announcement of the new Premier.
