PAKISTAN-Blocking Confidence Vote On PM Unconstitutional-Court

Reuters reporting that the Pakistan Supreme Court has ruled that the blocking of a no confidence vote in Prime Minister Imran Khan by the disssolution of parliament was unconstitutional. The Court has ruled that parliament will be restored and a no confidence vote will take place on Saturday 9 April.

  • In a unanimous 5-0 decision the Court ruled that a new PM will be selected if the vote goes against Khan (as it looks like it will given the loss of the gov'ts majority last week).
  • Pakistan is becoming an increasingly important regional actor, with its close investment relations with China causing concern in India and the United States (an historical ally of Pakistan during the 'war on terror'). A major destabilisation of the political landscape could therefore have implications for Asian politics beyond its borders.
