Panama Canal Authority Reduced Slots on Drought

The Panama Canal Authority is currently taking further steps to reduce traffic by reducing the number of ships that can cross, and force those that are allowed to pass to reduce their drafts, amid drought after precipitation in October fell to the lowest on record since 1950, according to a statement.

  • The Canal Authority reduced the number of vessels that can pass to 32 as of last week. Under normal conditions, around 38 vessels per day can navigate the canal.
  • Based on current rainfall projections, the authority is cutting daily slows to the following:
  • 25 from Nov 3-6
  • 24 from Nov 7-30
  • 22 from Dec 1-31
  • 20 from Jan 1-31
  • From 1 February, until further notice, the number of daily slots will be reduced to 18.
