Parliamentary Session Starts, Current Account Balance Eyed

POLAND
  • The lower house of parliament (Sejm) begins a four-day session today. Ruling Law and Justice party announced that "in principle" it will support President Andrzej Duda's amendments to the controversial bill establishing a panel to investigate Russian influence in Poland. The initial version of the bill sparked widespread controversy amid the conviction that it was designed to grill opposition leaders ahead of the upcoming parliamentary election, and open the door to taking punitive action against them. The President's amendments would deprive the commission of most of its powers, including the right to bar individuals from holding public office.
  • The amendments could be passed as soon as on Friday. On the other hand, DGP reported that the ruling party is unlikely to back the President's proposals that would give him more powers in shaping EU policies.
  • Poland's April current account balance will be published at 13:00BST/14:00CEST. According to the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey, surplus may have narrowed to EUR1.595bn from EUR1.643bn prior.
