Pelosi, McCarthy Call On GOP Rep Fortenberry To Resign After Convictions

US

Both the Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and House minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) have called on Congressman Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) to resign his seat following his conviction on Thursday of lying to federal authorities about an illegal USD30k campaign contribution given at a 2016 fundraiser.

  • Pelosi: “Congressman Fortenberry’s conviction represents a breach of the public trust and confidence in his ability to serve. No one is above the law. Congressman Fortenberry must resign from the House.”
  • McCarthy: "I think when someone's convicted, it's time to resign."
  • The nine-term Congressman has stated that the judicial process was 'unfair' and he would appeal the conviction.
  • Fortenberry's decision has a significant impact on the prospect of legislation pasing given the very narrow Democratic majority in the House. At present there are 222 Dem representatives to 210 GOP reps, with three vacant seats.
