Pelosi Pledges Support For Ukraine Amid Concerns GOP Will Move To Block Aid

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has said during a speech at the International Crimea Platform in in Zagreb, Croatia that the US will continue funding Ukraine’s military and humanitarian needs “until victory is won.”

  • Pelosi said: "Congress has secured over $60 billion in security, economic, humanitarian and budget assistance for Ukraine, including twelve and a third billion just weeks ago. And more will be on the way when we pass our omnibus funding bill this fall.”
  • The GOP is expected to take control of lower chamber in the midterm elections and Democrats have expressed concern that the likely incoming Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will rein in Congressional aid to Ukraine and apply more robust oversight on existing funding.
  • Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) also warned that the GOP will challenge efforts by Democrats to attach Ukraine aid to the omnibus funding package in the lame duck session of Congress.
  • A showdown over Ukraine funded may draw McCarthy and the Trump-aligned Freedom Caucus into conflict with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-KY) who stated this week his intention to accelerate Ukraine aid if Republicans take the Senate.
