Pentagon Press Conference Underway Shortly

US

Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh is shortly due to deliver a press conference from the Department of Defence.

  • The presser is likely to focus on the fallout from this week's explosion in Poland. US officials yesterday confirmed that they believe the explosion was caused by a stray Ukrainian air defence missile fired during the Russian bombardment of Western Ukraine.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has come under criticism for appearing to call for an expanded NATO roll in the conflict in the aftermath of the explosion.
  • An NATO diplomat told FT: “This is getting ridiculous. The Ukrainians are destroying [our] confidence in them. Nobody is blaming Ukraine and they are openly lying. This is more destructive than the missile.”
  • Singh also like to take questions on comments from Joint Chiefs Mark Milley suggesting that Ukraine should consider pursuing a diplomatic solution to the war, considering the strong negotiating position Kyiv holds.
  • Milley said: "it's unlikely Ukraine militarily will be able to completely kick Russia out of its territory any time soon barring a complete collapse of the Russian military, which is unlikely, so it may make sense to negotiate."
