Pentagon Spox Kirby To Hold Presser following Austin-Shoigu Call

  • The presser comes after a call between US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu this afternoon - a potentially significant moment in the diplomatic effort to bring the war in Ukraine to an end.
  • Austin wrote: 'I spoke with Russian Minister of Defense Sergey Shoygu today for the first time since February 18th. I urged an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and I emphasized the importance of maintaining lines of communication.'
  • Jack Detsch of FP writes: 'The U.S. had been consistently asking for a call between Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu since full-scale invasion of Ukraine 79 days ago.'
  • Detsch continues: '...Austin's hour-long phone call with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu 'didn't solve any acute issues' or change Russia's behavior: senior U.S. defense official.'
  • Kirby will also be asked about risks to the flow of military aid to Ukraine after the US Senate failed to pass a ~USD$40b aid package yesterday.
