PERU: Finance Minister Arista Says Priority Should Be High-Skilled Migrants
PERU
- Finance Minister Arista said in an interview yesterday that the government is worried about migration that could come from Bolivia, amid concerns of a potential economic collapse there. While Arista said that he isn’t greatly concerned about migration, according to a report on Bloomberg, he suggested that the government should prioritise higher-skilled workers.
- Bolivia has seen a collapse in foreign currency reserves and rise in inflation pressures, amid ongoing fuel shortages that are weighing on activity. Data released today showed that consumer prices rose by 1.64% m/m in October and 7.9% y/y.
- Arista said that migration can be good for the country, but there was a limit to how much labour the economy could absorb. He added that he is optimistic about the Peruvian economy, with growth of 3% expected this year and next, which is better than many regional peers and thus a source of attraction to potential migrants.
