Vice President Sara Duterte will be required to appear before officials from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on 29 November following shocking comments over the weekend that have raised political tensions to fever pitch. In an online presser on 23 Nov, the VP - daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte - claimed that she had contacted a hitman and instructed him to kill President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr, Marcos' wife and cousin, and the speaker of the House of Representatives if Duterte herself were to be killed. The VP later attempted to walk back the comments, but the damage was done with Marcos going on TV to claim he would "fight" the "criminal plot".
- While Marcos Jr. and Duterte ran on a joint ticket in the 2022 presidential election, their relationship has entirely collapsed. Disagreements over policy with regard to China and tensions in the South China Sea, how to counter the drug trade, as well as factional battles between the country's two most powerful political dynasties ahead of the 2025 midterm elections have severed any chance of rapprochement.
- Duterte has said that she will not stand in the way of any investigation. Under the Philippine constitution, the president enjoys immunity from prosecution but the VP does not.
