PM Babis Said President Zeman Asked Him To Form Government

CZECHIA
  • Recently beaten Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said today that Czech President Milos Zeman was ready to give him a chance to form another government.
  • The outlook over Czech government still remains uncertain in the short term following the general elections' results this weekend.
  • As a reminder, Czech statistics showed over the weekend that PM Babis' party ANO was defeated by the SPOLU alliance (Civic Democratic Party (ODS), KDU-ČSL, and TOP 09), which gathered 27.79% of the vote (vs. 27.12% for ANO), securing 71 of the 200 seats in the lower house of parliament.
  • Representatives of the winning SPOLU coalition met with the Pir-STAN coalition on Saturday evening, signing a memorandum about their willingness to form a government, capturing 108 seats at the parliament.
  • However, President Zeman previously indicated that he would first give a mandate to the leader of the strongest party, not the strongest coalition, therefore giving Babis a small chance of forming a viable government in the coming weeks.
  • But the situation became unclear after Zeman was rushed to hospital; Senate leader Milos Vystrcil recently mentioned that he was 'concerned' about president's ability to carry out his duties.
