PM Commits EUR230mn To Ukraine Aid, Warns Of Russia Threat To Europe

DENMARK

Speaking at a press conference, Danish PM Mette Frederiksen confirms that her gov't will send a DKK1.7bn (EUR230mn) aid package to Ukraine, and called on Kyiv's allies to boost their contributions to the Ukrainian military. Frederiksen stated that "Unfortunately, it is now clear to everyone that Russia wants war more than Russia wants peace...It is the most serious security policy situation since the end of the Cold War,"

  • Frederiksen commits to Denmark supporting Ukraine financially and militarily for the next decade, saying "Words do not make peace, and time does not help Ukraine. It's action on the battlefield that counts. Therefore, from the Danish side, we will continue our donations as long as it is necessary." The DKK69.1bn (EUR9.3bn) Danish-Ukraine Fund will support the commitments, with the fund currently financed through 2028.
  • On NATO: "Our unity is not only encouraging, it is also our strongest defense against Putin...It will be expensive, what we are facing. But freedom comes with a price."
  • Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen says that the aid package will pay for 15k artillery shells alongside drones and air defence systems.
  • Asked by reporters whether future PM's will be bound by the support agreement, Frederiksen demures, claiming that she sees no reason why a future PM would not want to back up Ukraine.
  • The announcement comes a short time after the Defence Minsitry confirmed that Denmark is now hitting the 2% of GDP spending on defence called for by NATO.
