PM CoS-Gov't Sent Planned Legal Changes To EU; Seeks To Protect Funding

Comments hitting wires from PM Viktor Orban's chief of staff regarding communications with the EU on Budapest's offer of what it calls 'comprehensive' legal amendments to avoid censure for breaching EU rule-of-law standards and risking billions of euros in funding:

  • Hungary PM Orban’s Chief Of Staff:- Gov't send reply to EU Commission, it contains more planned law amendments.
  • CoS: We trust talks with the EU will be successful.
  • CoS: Parliament could pass these amendments by end-Oct.
  • Earlier today, Justice Minister Judit Varga posted a statement on Facebook saying that “The Hungarian government has put a comprehensive package of measures on the table to address all the Commission’s concerns...[Hungary is] open to a constructive dialogue.”
  • BBG: "At risk is a share of 5.8 billion euros ($5.8 billion) of pandemic recovery funds as well as the 21.7 billion euros that is Hungary’s share of the EU’s 2021-2027 budget."
