PM: End Of Lockdown To Be 'Based Firmly On Cautious & Prudent Approach'

On a trip to Wales, PM Boris Johnson delivers comments to pool clip on the gov'ts plan for unwinding COVID-19 lockdown measures in the UK.

  • "[...] we'll be setting out what we can on Monday the 22nd about the way ahead, it will be based firmly on a cautious and prudent approach to coming out of lockdown in such a way as to be irreversible." Confirms that unwinding will take place in stages, 'based on data, not dates'.
  • Says, "'We want to be going one way from now on [with regards to easing and never tightening restrictions]."
  • Schools in England expected to be reopened from 8 March in the first part of the unwinding of lockdown restrictions that have been in place in the country since January 5.
  • On a separate topic, Johnson asked whether Welsh devolution had been a 'disaster' [referring to a comment PM supposedly made in private to Conservative MPs last year regarding devolution of powers to regional gov'ts], replies "Devolution can work very well, but it depends very much on what local authorities do".
