PM Faces Showdown With Right Of Party On Rwanda Bill Votes

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faces a showdown with the right of his governing Conservative party at the House of Commons is set to vote on amendments to the gov'ts Rwanda bill. Right-wing Conservative MPs are set to back a amendments to the Rwanda bill intended to toughen up the legislation that looks to ensure the deportation of some failed asylum seekers to the central African nation. The legislation in itself is not market relevant, but the fallout of the votes could have notable implications for gov't stability.

  • The amendments are unlikely to pass, given that both the gov't and opposition object to them. The Conservative rebels then face the choice of either swallowing their objections and voting in favour of the legislation, or voting against and risking a gov't defeat and potential confidence vote.
  • Paul Waugh at the i Newspaper reports the first votes on amendments could take place around 1730GMT. The crucial vote on the third reading is set to come on the evening of 17 Jan.
