PM Heavily Criticised In Commons On Gov'ts Afghanistan Response

UK

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been on the receiving end of significant criticism from MPs in the House of Commons regarding his gov'ts response to the collapse of the Afghan gov't in recent days and weeks.

  • It is not just opposition MPs that have criticised the gov't, but a number of Conservative MPs as well. Major criticism on Conservative benches comes over the lack of foresight and poor intelligence from UK gov't in terms of expectations of how swiftly the Taliban could retake Afghanistan.
  • Leader of the Opposition Sir Keir Starmer criticises PM on reductions in foreign aid, and the recent military review that only mentioned Afghanistan twice and did not mention the Taliban at all. Also brings up the holidays taken by PM and Foreign Secretary during the Taliban sweep of Afghanistan.
  • MPs on all sides of the House have also strongly criticised the actions of the United States in the Afghan withdrawal, significantly more support from legislators in the UK on NATO troops remaining in Afghanistan than from those in Congress. However, with US public opinion not overwhelmingly in favour of re-engagement, this UK-US divergence is unlikely to change.
  • Former PM Theresa May: "Was our intelligence really so poor? Was our understanding of the Afghan government so weak? … Or did we just think we had to follow the United States and on a wing and a prayer it would be alright?"
