SINGAPORE
SINGAPORE: PM Lee Hsien Loong has advised President Halimah Yacob to dissolve
the Singaporean parliament in order to hold a general electio on July 10.
- Lee claims a new mandate is required for the gov't to deal with the fallout
from COVID-19.
- The PM's People's Action Party (PAP) has governed Singapore since 1959, when
the country was still a self-governing state within the British Empire.
- There is little likelihood of a change in gov't with the PAP holding 82 of the
105 seats in the unicameral Parliament at present.
- Singapore has 42,313 recorded cases of COVID-19, the third-highest in the Far
East behind China and Indonesia, two nations with far larger populations than
Singapore.
