PM Lofven Tenders Resignation, Fin Min Andersson Set To Take Over

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven has tendered his resignation having served in office since October 2014. He is set to be replaced with new head of the centre-left Social Democrats, finance minister Magdalena Andresson.

  • Andersson takes over at the head of a minority gov't relying on a confidence and supply agreement that holds a majority of just one seat, 175-174 in the Riksdag (parliament).
  • The next election is not due to take place until 11 September 2022 at the latest.
  • Andersson's elevation to the premiership comes after negotiations between the Social Democrat-Green gov't and the agrarian Centre Party, which supports the gov't as part of a confidence and supply agreement.
