SLOVENIA
SLOVENIA: PM Marjan Sarec's resignation comes as the PM says his minority
coalition gov't is now unable to pass legislation following resignation of
finance minister earlier in the day.
- With snap elections in the offing, focus will now shift to what the next gov't
could look like.
- In 2018 election, the centre-right Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) won a
plurality, but could not find enough coalition allies to form a majority gov't.
Since then, opinion polls show a decline in support for the SDS, from 24.9% to
around 13-16% in Jan.
- PM Marjan Sarec's centrist big-tent party (called the List of Marjan Sarec,
LMS) on the other hand, has recorded an increase in support, from 12.6% in the
2018 election to around 14-19% support in Jan.
- As after the last election, the LMS is likely to have more options in seeking
coalition partners compared to the SDS. As after 2018, the Social Democrats, New
Slovenia-Christian Democrats, Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia, and
even far-left 'The Left' could offer support to LMS to keep SDS out of power.
