PM Meloni-I Am Not Working Towards Gov't Reshuffle

ITALY

Speaking at a lengthy presser, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni states that she does not wish for, nor is working towards a reshuffle of her gov't. Meloni: "I don't deal with the candidatures for the European elections. I don't want, I don't hope for and I'm not working on a reshuffle. Then we will evaluate what the various parties do in their nominations. We have evaluated the possibilities of nominating the three majority leaders, but we have not talked about it nor have we asked ourselves the problem. But I am not working to obtain a reshuffle".

  • Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has been under some pressure of late related to "claims he may have been involved in a case of allegedly rigged contracts for motorway company ANAS in which former Berlusconi ally Denis Verdini and his son have been placed under investigation." Salvini is in a relationship with Verdini's daughter. Salvini denies any impropriety and has threatened legal action in response.
  • There has been speculation that Meloni could seek to promote an alliance between the soft eurosceptic European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group - in which her Brothers of Italy party sits - and the centre-right European People's Party (EPP) after the June European parliament elections. This would risk a rift with Salvini, whose League sits in the right-wing populist Identity and Democracy (ID) group.
