ITALY

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni delivering speech to the Chamber of Deputies ahead of the first confidence vote in her newly-installed gov't.

  • Meloni: 'Italy will respect EU financial rules....We do not need foreign supervision of our gov't, those who say we need foreign supervision are disrespectful to Italians...we will make our voice strongly heard in EU institutions...the EU cannot be a club of first and second-class members...'
  • Meloni: '2023 will be a recession year...Govt Will Perhaps Face Hardest Challenges Since WW2...the energy crisis will force us to put off other measures we would have wanted in the 2023 budget...we'll have to increase financial support for families and firms hit by the energy crisis'.
  • Meloni: "Italy will continue to be a reliable partner of the Atlantic Alliance, starting from supporting the brave Ukrainian people who oppose the invasion of the Russian Federation [...] Giving in to Putin's blackmail will not solve the energy crisis, it will make it worse"
Having come to office over the weekend, the initial formulation of the Meloni gov't has seen markets remain relatively calm,
  • Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti viewed as something of an establishment figure, relatively moderate and pro-EU for someone from the right-wing populist League.
  • Former European Parliament President Antonio Tajani as a Deputy PM and foreign minister also soothing for markets. Tajani from Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia seen as a 'safe pair of hands' in dealing with other EU members.
