PM Solberg To Resign, Paving Way For Labour's Støre To Take Over

Following the 13 September legislative election, Norwegian PM Erna Solberg has formally submitted the resignation of her centre-right gov't following the conclusion of coalition talks between the centre-left Labour Party and the agrarian Centre Party. As expected, Solberg has recommended to the King that Labour leader Jonas Gahr Støre be invited to seek to form a gov't.

  • Labour and the Centre Party will govern as a minority administration, holding 76 of the 169 seats in parliament. Talks with the Socialist Left Party to form a majority coalition collapsed due to disagreements on climate policy and tax. However, Norway has a long history of minority gov'ts and as such the lack of a majority should not be viewed as an indicator of immediate political uncertainty, especially given that snap elections are not possible under the Norwegian constitution.
