PM Srettha Calls For Unscheduled BoT Meeting To Cut Rates

THAILAND

Thailand PM Srettha has called on the Bank of Thailand to hold an unscheduled meeting and cut interest rates. This comes after yesterday's weaker than expected Q4 GDP print, with the PM describing the country's economic situation as in a 'critical stage'.

  • The PM said on X "“I want to beg for monetary policy committee to call for a meeting to consider the rate cut without waiting for the scheduled one.”
  • This arguably represents a step up in rhetoric from the PM and authorities around pressure on BoT to cut the policy rate. Such calls have risen in recent months, although the PM did state earlier in the year that BoT was independent.
  • Note the next scheduled BoT policy meeting is for April 10.
