PM To Address Conservative MPs At 1730GMT As COVID-19 Rebellion Looms

UK

Harry Yorke at The Daily Telegraph reports that PM Boris Johnson will address the 1922 Committee, formed of backbench (non-governmental) Conservative MPs, at 1730GMT ahead of this evening's vote on COVID-19 'Plan B' measures.

  • The COVID-19 measures include the use of 'vaccine passports' to enter large events, with negative tests or proof of previous infection no longer accepted. This move has proved controversial among Conservative MPs, with 85 stating that they will vote against the measures.
  • The opposition Labour party has stated that it would vote in favour of the measures, meaning they will pass without issue. However, the size of the Conservative rebellion (nearly a quarter of all Conservative MPs) will come as a major concern for PM Johnson, already under major pressure following weeks of negative headlines.
  • Should the rebellion exceed Johnson's working majority of 79 it would put him in a precarious position, with internal opponents aware that his gov't could lose votes on legislation or a vote of confidence.
