PM to Deliver SONA This Weekend; Anti-Government Demonstrations Begin Shortly

HUNGARY
  • Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will deliver a State of Nation Address (SONA) on Saturday, as is the tradition to mark the beginning of the spring political season. The Prime Minister usually uses the event to address the challenges facing Hungary and set out the ruling Fidesz party’s agenda for the year ahead.
  • The SONA comes at a critical time for Orban, who is coming under increasing pressure following the resignation of former President Katalin Novak and former Justice Minister Judit Varga for their roles in issuing a presidential pardon in a child-abuse case. Anti-government protests are set to be held today, with demonstrations set to begin at 17:00GMT/18:00CET.
  • The controversy is unlikely to pose any sort of immediate threat to Orban’s rule given the elections in 2026 are still some way off. Nevertheless, the Prime Minister would have been hoping to gain from a rise in far-right support across Europe ahead of the European parliamentary elections in June.
