PM Trudeau Faces Tough '24 Amid Polls Calling For Resignation

CANADA

PM Justin Trudeau's centre-left Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) remain under pressure in opinion polling, with the latest survey from Ipsos recording a majority of respondents supportive of the idea that Trudeau steps down as LPC head and PM in 2024, although most do not believe he will. Polling from Ipsos carried out 8-11 Dec showed 69% of respondents saying that Trudeau should resign in 2024, with 31% in favour of him remaining in office.

  • However, just 28% of respondents believe Trudeau is very or somewhat likely to step down, compared to 63% who believe it is very or somewhat unlikely that he resigns.
  • Trudeau's LPC continues to trail Pierre Poilievre's centre-right Conservative Party of Canada (CPC). Despite a small recovery in LPC support in Nov and Dec (see chart below), the CPC's lead continues to run at around 15%. Should current polling be reflected in a general election, it would most likely result in a CPC majority.
  • The next general election does not have to take place until Oct 2025 at the latest. According to the poll, though, the majority of respondents see the election next year, with 59% of those asked saying they expect the vote to take place in 2024.
  • A Nanos poll for Bloombergwill also make difficult holiday reading for Trudeau, stating that "Some 53% said their personal finances are worse now than eight years ago, [...] while 24% said they were better off and 21% said there had been no change."
