PM-We Will Look To Reinforce Gotland To Boost Baltic Security

SWEDEN

In an interview with the FT following Sweden's formal accession to NATO, PM Ulf Kristersson states that "...bolstering Gotland, an island viewed by defence experts and military officials as the most strategic location in the Baltic Sea, would be in the first slew of items to discuss with Nato partners." In the immediate aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, the gov't of then-PM Magdalena Andersson committed to boostingmilitary spending in relation to Gotland, with an additional SEK1.6bn (USD163mn) set aside.

  • Kristersson: “There are quite a few things in terms of how to deploy our resources, where to focus the most. And obviously everything to do with the Baltic Sea is such an obvious candidate...That goes in terms of presence on Gotland, but also in terms of surveillance, in terms of submarine capabilities.”
  • Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have pushed for a greater Swedish military presence on Gotland, where in the late 1990s 25k troops were stationed compared to 370 now. In the event of any Russian military assault on the Baltics, Gotland would prove a launchpad for support, avoiding the Suwalki gap, the only land link between the Baltics and another NATO state.
  • The 2024 budget put Sweden's military spending at SEK27bn (USD2.44bn), equivalent to 2.1% of GDP. Given Sweden's strategically important location and its possession of the fifth-largest navy in the world there is likely to be sustained calls on the Swedish Treasury to continue to boost defence spending in the years ahead, pressuring the state budget.
